Last week Rhobi was invited to tell her story as an FGM survivor and activist at a high level panel as part of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. She spoke movingly about begging her parents not to cut her, as she feared dying and her body being thrown in the bush to be eaten by wild animals, as had happened to her friend Sabina. But her pleas were in vain and she was cut and nearly bled to death. She has since dedicated her life to saving other girls from a similar fate.

You can watch a recording of her testimony here.

The following day Rhobi participated in our mapathon at UNFPA where we explained how better maps can help activists like Rhobi quickly find girls at risk of FGM and showed people how they can help to create them. There were side events in over 60 countries as part of this global FGM event, including at the Ministry of Women in Somalia, and with FGM activists in Kenya, Guinea, Mali, Niger, Uganda, Djibouti and many more. Together they mapped over 49,000 buildings and almost 7000 km of roads to better protect girls at risk.

At UNFPA Tyler and Rebecca from HOT also explained how maps can be used for many humanitarian purposes. It was a great privilege to present Crowd2Map at the first State of the Map Africa held in Kampala last weekend. Over 150 people came from 21 countries and I've never been to part of a conference that had such a strong sense of community. There can't be many places where people from such diverse backgrounds as Apple, the World Bank and Mapbox get to collaborate, dance and even play football with activists from Mali, Niger and Kenya, and community mappers from around the world.

The Map Uganda team did a great job - even down to the
amazing t-shirts, although they were no match for the Rest of the World football team that closed the conference.
And I was extremely impressed with the many Youthmappers from many countries, and hope they will support the chapter we have just set up at the Institute of Rural Development Planning in Tanzania.
subsistence farmers living on around 80p a day and can only grow crops during

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Climate Change is already having an impact here. Ponds that used to supply water year round for

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">That is already happening in other areas of Tanzania. In Kibirizi students walk for up to 4 hours a
day to get to and from secondary school, on an empty stomach as there are no
school lunches here. When girls get home,
they are expected to go to collect water and firewood and so have no time to
study. To try and help them overcome
this disadvantage TDT helped the school set up a girls’ hostel nearby. 20 girls stayed there during the week, cooking
and studying together by solar light each evening and then sleeping on the
floor in one room when the lights ran out.
Their dedication is astounding.
They are determined to be the first in their families to go onto to
further education and become

But in May 2016 Avanti, set up a pilot Community Hotspot in Zeze providing satellite broadband in the village, courtesy of a grant from the UK Space Agency.

This has meant that MVG are now able to communicate with the outside world. They are monitoring climate change and water levels in a research project with Kings College, London, and can now email data without having to travel. They have also been able to download resources to teach the illiterate women starting to learn to read in the community library, as well as e-books for the children.

Unemployment is high in Zeze - there are very few opportunities other than the subsistence farming that is insufficient to provide an adequate income. But when the schools need new desks they currently get carpenters in from Kasulu, as there are none with adequate tools or skills in Zeze. So MVG is setting up a welding and carpentry workshop to train local youth and provide these services locally. Getting equipment to a village 60km from a tarmac road and 40km from mains electricity is a slow process, particularly in the rainy season when everything turns to mud, but the workshop is built, the instructors in place and the youth identified, and excited to start learning in the New Year.

One of the issues with farming here is that soils are
depleted and farmers cannot afford good seeds or organic fertilisers. So MVG have set up a farmer training and loan scheme to help them. The first 31 farmers planted their hybrid maize last week after great rejoicing that the rains had finally arrived, 2 months late. Another issue is access to water. So far MVG have hand drilled 5 bore holes, including at the clinic, which did not have water. This is a slow, hard, process, taking up to 6 days of hard physical labour for 7 men. But it saves hours of walking to collect water for the villagers, and means they don't rely on the filthy ponds some of them resorted to previously.

They've got big plans to improve their community here, and money goes a very long way, so if you are able to donate it is very much appreciated and you can do so here. As a 13 year old she knew well the dangers of FGM, as one of her friends had died from the practice the previous year. She pleaded in vain with her parents not to subject her to it. Having nowhere to turn she had no choice but to submit to the cut, which almost cost her her life as she bled so much she fell unconscious.
To ensure girls know they have a safe place to turn, Rhobi visits the remote villages where they are most at risk to tell them about their rights. But there are no maps available meaning it is very hard to ensure all villages are covered. Villages like Sogoti were forgotten by the outside world. Rhobi had to cut down trees to reach it the first time she visited.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Now we have added the school to Openstreetmap, but not yet the roads leading to it, making navigation still <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">difficult.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We want to ensure that girls in villages like Sogoti are protected from FGM and forced marriage. Rhobi wants an activist in each village that girls at risk can turn to, and each of these places clearly labelled on a map, with a contact number. Then girls in danger can more easily be directed to people who will help them, and be found easily by safe house staff.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We have started the map - please join us to complete it.and help protect girls like Javita.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">There is more information about this mapping project and how much we have mapped here.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">But news of the Safe House has spread far and wide, and there are now 161 girls from as far away as Loliondo, 5 hours by bus.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Some of the girls are as young as 9. Girls like Javita, left, fleeing with her sister. Her mother told them to run, fearing that her neighbours would force them to be cut. Javita is an amazing dancer, and wants to be a doctor, she told me shyly.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Others have come alone or with their friends. Many ran away at night after finding out that they were going to be cut in the morning. They arrive at the Safe House with just the clothes they are wearing.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">On Human Rights day last week the girls marched around Mugumu town demanding control over their bodies and singing songs they have composed proclaiming "We girls of today don't want FGM".
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It's a struggle to
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">accommodate so many girls, especially as there is no kitchen and everything is cooked on firewood. The girls eat outside which is difficult during the frequent rain.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Girls are now sharing 3 to a mattress and we've made a makeshift dormitory in the tailoring room. But spirits are high - the girls know they are the lucky ones, many of their friends back in the villages are now dealing with the many health problems that come with being cut, including the very real danger of HIV infection. You can see a short film about the Safe House here and one about Salama, the abandoned baby rescued from wild dogs that they are sheltering here.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "verdana" , sans-serif; line-height: 20.8px;">It's the rainy season in Zeze so everyone is busy in the fields making the most of the precious water to try and grow enough to sustain their families over the dry season. <span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "verdana" , sans-serif; line-height: 20.8px;">The unpredictability of the rainfall and lack of any storage is not without it's problems. Everyone conserves the little they have as
obtaining it is so difficult – carrying it long distances to your home, queuing
at the pump… There is also the continual
fear that another of the pumps will fail, making water even harder to
obtain. These are constantly breaking
down. When I visited in June only 5 were
working, on my most recent visit in August, only 3 were working. There have
been times when the whole village of 8000 people are down to 1 working pump.

The local fundis (handymen) appear to be
resourceful and show initiative, even to the extent of trying to make local

help and visit but don’t. They don’t
stock any spare parts in Kasulu and say they order them from India when
necessary. One pump has been broken for
over a year because pipes have broken off and fallen inside the well and there
is no equipment to get them out.

with a solar one I bought on ebay, courtesy of a generous donor and brought out
in my luggage. As the water is so deep
(36m down) we had to run it at 24V on two car batteries. Getting these was a mission in itself. You can buy very little in Zeze itself so a
friend bought them in Kasulu and put them on a daladala (communal minibus) to
drop them off at the junction 10km away where they were met by another
friend
with a motorbike. Unfortunately when
they arrived they were suspiciously light… because they were empty of the
necessary acid, meaning we had to repeat the process the following day with
bottles of acid..

We’d spent a long time negotiating with drivers in Kasulu to
bring the 1000l plastic tank on their roof.
The first one in the village, this was a great novelty. Benedicto tracked down the one man in Zeze with
a saw and proceeded to make a wooden structure to put the tank on.

Getting the right seals to fix the pipes was another
challenge. I’d brought out all the seals
I thought we would need and we bought the only jubilee clips we could find in
Kasulu, but in the end had to tie things together with old car tyre
strips..

But finally, by torchlight, the pump, dry for over a year,
started pumping water, to great cheers and excitement. The pump isn’t really powerful enough for
this. It takes around 5 hours to fill the tank and it can’t keep up with the
demand for water. The long term plan is
to raise enough money to buy a heavy duty pump capable of filling the 1,000,000l
tank that has been out of use since the 1970s..

But, for now, the villagers are saved a long walk to a working pump…

see a number of the women working closely with their husbands as partners in
the business, whereas previously they worked much more separately. This appears
to have had a positive effect on their relationships, which was confirmed by
the women themselves. In the training women were told “Don’t use your loan to
exploit your husband, rather money should be a tool for strengthening the love
in your family”. They seem to have
taken this to heart!

There are very few text books in the school, and none for research or further reading, so when I visited in June I brought a raspberry pi computer with downloaded content such as Wikipedia and Khan Academy videos on it. As there is no electricity in the school they run this from a portable battery which they recharge in the headteacher's house which has solar panels.

But now Zeze has the opportunity to have a free satellite broadband installation, courtesy of funding from the UK Space Agency. Very few of the students have ever left the village. There are no female staff. The headteacher, Mr Mabhuye is very keen for the girls to have successful role models to boost their confidence. He is also keen to develop links with schools in the UK to expand their horizons and share ideas.

However there is a catch. They need to install solar power in the school by the end of September in order to order to benefit from this offer. At a cost of £780 this is way beyond the scope of the school. If you would like to contribute to this project you can do so here. All donations gratefully received. Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05720855513548307009noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6508709454242586363.post-87273747260417326122015-07-01T22:48:00.001-07:002015-07-01T22:48:20.850-07:00Bees and Sunflowers in Zeze

I was last with Benedicto in Zeze in January. Then he was talking about his dream of
constructing bee hives to improve incomes in Zeze village.

Now, thanks to many of you the hives are in place. It hasn’t been without its challenges. Moving the wood was delayed due to flooding
during the rainy season, which also led to delays in the wood drying out
sufficiently to make the hives, but last week the remaining hives were hung in
the trees near the Moringa field, making 63 in total. I’m glad I wasn’t here to witness this as it
looked like a very precarious operation.

Already 12 hives are occupied by bees, and Benedicto is

be on track to harvest honey in October as planned.
In January a donor had given me £9 to give Benedicto, which
he spent on Sunflower seeds. These he
planted during the rainy season and has just harvested more than 10 times as
many.

I (briefly) helped his father in
shelling these, ready to press into oil to sell.

Benedicto never asks for money. I asked him why, as the sunflowers had been
so successful, he isn’t planting more now. He explained he can only grow them in the rainy season as his land is far from water sources so irrigation is
impossible now. When pressed on what he
would need to do this he explains. If he digs down 25m with a spade he can borrow from his neighbour, he could set up a solar pump to power a drip irrigation scheme.

Such a system would transform
agriculture here, and with help from generous donors he will start this in July...I've been promised avocados next time I visit..

the cutting season had finished. Most of
the girls who had sought refuge then were slowly being reunited with their
families. Sophia, the social worker and
Rhobi, were painstakingly negotiating affidavits with the parents, guaranteeing
that they would not cut their daughters or marry them against their will. With
thirty four girls the parents refused to cooperate and so they remained at the

Water is problematic. Almost all of the inhabitants are farmers growing maize and beans, with an average annual income per family of around 300,000 shillings (£112). This explains why many of the children have ragged clothes and no shoes.

Benedicto and his group have many plans to raise income, including growing more lucrative crops such as Moringa. Currently his immediate concern is to put in hives before March 15th when the bees begin to swarm. He has worked out that by sourcing the wood from one farmer and carrying it on foot to the local fundi he can get the hives made for around £20 each. He estimates each hive will generate 30 litres of honey and he has already found buyers willing to buy in bulk. Therefore when he harvests in October he should be able to make a good profit that can be used to support projects in the village.

His problem is capital. He has identified
150 good sites for hives. Currently he has funds for 15 hives. He would like to set up at least 40. Therefore he is offering anyone who invests £20 in a hive now a return of £25 in November when the honey is sold. Often they had been beaten by their fathers for their refusal. One 10 year old, Bhoke, was found lying on the ground unable to stand as her legs had been so badly cut by her father's machete. A week into the cutting season, with the building unfinished, they are struggling to cope with 80 girls seeking refuge, with 12 arriving last night alone..

Here is a message I received from Rhobi via What's App this morning..

The
situation is challenging! The safe house can accommodate 40 girls but now we
have more and we are still receiving girls in order to protect them. So we are
also using the Vocational Training Centre classes to accommodate other girls. We have only 40
mattress. Still the safe house doesn't have a kitchen or dining hall.

situation of girls when arriving is not good, that some they don't have shoes,
with torn clothes, some are psychologically affected. So we need some
basic needs like clothes, shoes, toothbrushes, soap,
sanitary towels etc. Another challenge is that the safe house doesn't have a car
which could help managing collecting girls from different areas without
breaking down while the girls are inside! This is very
dangerous in the bush girls could be taken away to their parents for
FGM. The increased number of girls in the centre affects everything
planned eg. food, bedsheets, blankets etc. I would like to thank the local churches
and mosques which are contributing food for girls in the centre.

Some of girls are orphans and are in secondary schools in their wards!

school fees and other needs. We thank the government for provision of security

She walks 3 hours each way to school from her
village in rural Tanzania. When she gets home she has to collect water
and firewood for cooking before she can study by candlelight. Sometimes her parents can afford kerosene for
a brighter light but this hurts her eyes and makes her cough. Her parents are subsistence farmers and cannot
afford a £6 solar light. There are 72
students in her class and they haven’t had a science teacher for 6 months. There are a few text books in her school which

they can be used offline. Grace was transfixed by the videos explaining the

to stop and rewind the bits she didn't fully understand first time. On Wikipedia for schools she was mesmerised by how
clicking on links brought up so much detail and how she could look up words she

it would be impossible to fail.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Building rural livelihoods and eliminating poverty in Tanzania...

I<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> met Benedicto Hosea by chance. A well wisher from England who he'd met online had been so impressed with his drive to improve life in his village she'd asked me to take out a camera to him.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">When we met he talked with such passion and knowledge about the youth organisation he had set up in his village of Zeze I was convinced to take a one day detour along dusty, potholed roads to take a look.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Benedicto is the first in his family to go to secondary school, let alone university. When he finished his degree in in November he returned to Zeze and set up an organisation to counter its poverty and malnutrition. Mboni ya Vijana (it means "the eyes of youth" in Swahili) is small but committed and growing month by month. Its members who pay monthly subscriptions of 5000 shillings (about £1.50) to buy bulk seeds and farming equipment . Even this modest amount is often a struggle for these subsistence farmers and they have to sometimes borrow from each other. They are worried about the costs but excited about the possibilities.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Even with this small capital they are transforming lives. Changing practices have doubled maize yields, growing the nutritional wonder plant Moringa will bring in 4 times their current income. This means children will be able to go to school, needed medicine bought and villages won't go to bed hungry so often.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">They have big plans: bee hives, a cassava processor, pumping water from a nearby stream in the dry season, all meticulously researched and costed. Benedicto lives in a village without electricity but every night he walks through the rural darkness with his laptop to find a neighbour with charge from a solar panel or generator. He works from 2am, when the mobile signal is strongest. Discussing best irrigation techniques with farmers from El Salvador, negotiating prices with moringa processors, and planning....
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Next week they are holding their training camp in Zeze to keep spreading the word..
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">With 40% of Tanzanian children stunted by malnutrition, it's a timely message.

Challenges are huge. Many of the girls are traumatised by the abuse they have suffered so much of FADICE's work is to rebuild their confidence and self esteem. Sometimes girls get so depressed by the poverty and challenge in their lives they lose hope, but Philemon does not give up on them.
Evelyn is a single parent looking after her 4 children alone after her abusive husband disappeared, plus her dead sister's child. This is via a Womens' Entrepeneur Group also supported by FADICE.

You may think such work would be demoralising, but Philemon was permanently positive, with an infectious laugh and ready humour.

On my last day FADICE organised a party for the girls and their care
givers. I was guest of honour and was serenaded in and out of the room and had to lead the dancing!

The climax of the party was a game of BINGO, Tanzanian style. Rather than lines and numbers, this turned out to be a raucous game involving running around and then suddenly hurling yourselves into groups of a specified number. Not understanding Swahili I was at rather a disadvantage, but it didn't seem to matter.

Philemon uses this game, and others, to build cooperation, thinking skills and self esteem, and also, just for fun.. He explains, happily, that the girls are unrecognisable from when they started at the centre 2 months ago.

Rhobi Samwelly is Tanzania Development Trust's local representative in Mara region and the inspiration and powerhouse behind the Safe House project.

Rhobi's passion for helping girls at risk of Female Genital Mutilation or FGM is immediately obvious.However I did not at first realise just how personal this campaign is for her.

Rhobi grew up in a small village in Mara. Her father was from the Kurya tribe and her mother Masai. When she was 11 she remembers a number of girls from the village going off to have FGM and one of them died. Tradition dictates that if a girl dies during the procedure she cannot be buried, but instead her body is thrown in the bushes to be eaten by wild animals. Rhobi understandably was very upset by this.
When she was 13 Rhobi was told by her parents it was her time for FGM. She pleaded with her mother but was told "it is our tradition and you must undergo it" She was also told that if she didn't comply she would never marry and the family would not be respected in the community.
Rhobi seriously considered running away but had nowhere to go. All of her relatives would have supported her parents. She had no option but to go ahead. Her grandfather had paid for a special circumciser for her from the next village, but she did it slowly and badly and Rhobi lost so much blood she lost consciousness, Her family and neighbours were all crying and thought she was dying. They were still too scared of being arrested to take her to a hospital. Miraculously she pulled through. Although she was angry with her family she agreed to forgive them if they promised not to cut her sisters, which they did.

Despite this trauma, Rhobi did very well at school and was awarded a place at a prestigious secondary school. This didn't stop her grandfather saying "Why do you insist on going to school, you should marry and get your father cows". Ironically this pressure ceased the following year when he was gored to death by a cow when returning from market.

Rhobi excelled at secondary school and qualified to be a teacher. When she returned home her parents told her they had arranged her marriage and had already accepted the cows. She cried for a week but finally felt she had no choice but to go through with the marriage. She refused to have a ceremony though, as that would have sacrificed a cow and meant she could not have left the marriage in the future without paying it back.

The traditional elders carry great weight in the village. They meet under a specific tree and no-one else is allowed to pass anywhere near, unless they are summoned. They dispense justice and punishment and if you deny a charge they will make you drink a truth drug from a skull. Women can only approach the tree on their knees.

The elders in Maguri village in Serengeti summoned Rhobi to attend. She said she would not attend the tree but eventually persuaded them to meet her in the school. They were hostile to her anti FGM advocacy but eventually she managed to persuade them and they are now supportive of her campaign.
I was pleased to see builders on site putting in the door lintels. I was told that the windows and doors were ready to go in tomorrow and that the safe house should be finished by the end of September. This is fantastic news, particularly as Rhobi is expecting girls refusing
village leaders explaining the effects of GBV, early marriage, HIV and FGM. This was followed by a meeting with the whole community. However there were sometimes issues with women being kept from attending these meetings by their husbands, so instead Rhobi organises traditional dance competitions in the villages, which had a much better female attendance rate, and then finished the event with a community forum with a motion such as "FGM helps to discipline girls in our community" which led to heated debate. Rhobi also trained community workers in each village to support women and girls, and created a radio announcement about the dangers of FGM which was aired on local radio every day in the cutting month of December 2012.

This led to 16 girls deciding to stand up to their parents and refuse to go through with FGM, with its horrific, long term health effects. The girls, aged between 9 and 13 went to their local pastors, who took them in. ACT then came with a police officer from the gender desk in Mugumu, the regional capital, and a lawyer and had meetings with the village leaders. Eventually the parents agreed to sign an affidavit promising not to mutilate their daughters and they were able to go home. Rhobi keeps in regular contact with these girls, and they are still fine, except one who failed her Standard 7 exam and so as this means she could not go on to secondary school, had to get married, at 14. Fifty per cent of the girls who marry below the age of 18 in these villages will be HIV positive within six months.

Accommodating the girls before they become reconciled with their parents puts huge pressure on the pastors, who live in very humble homes in the villages, and for girls finishing their education there are currently no alternatives to early marriage. Therefore we are building a Safe House and Vocational Training Centre in Mugumu, so girls who fail their Standard 7 exam can instead learn a trade such as tailoring or carpentry, to support themselves.

While we had dinner with Pastor Moses Homboi and his wife, Rhobi's phone kept ringing. She explained about a woman in Magotini village, who was continually being beaten up by her husband. In desperation she had contacted Rhobi who had helped her to report him to the local police. Unfortunately the husband bribed them to let him go and the violence started again. Rhobi contacted the Chief of Police in Mugumu to complain, who transferred the corrupt officer to another station. The next time the husband abused her the local police again arrested him. They were reluctant to keep him in though and suggested to the abused woman that she should either take him back or pay them to transfer him to Mugumu. Again Rhobi complained to the Chief. He said the man should be transferred , but there was a problem of transport. So Rhobi dispatched the project driver to go to the village to pick up the husband, under police escort, to deliver him to the main police office in town.

Rhobi deals with issues like this on a daily basis. Unless she supports women who finally have the courage to try and fight for their rights they will simply go back to accepting their fate, as before.

Tomorrow we will visit two of the villages to see community forums in action.

As my bus went right past Ngorongoro Crater I thought it would be foolish not to stop. The bus was to drop me at Rhino junction, inside the National Park. Even though it was only a short walk to the lodge I was told this was very dangerous and I must be met there. So I arranged with the lodge that I would phone them when the bus went past the viewpoint and they would come and meet me at the junction.

As we climbed up to the crater rim it became very foggy. The bus was incredibly crowded ad the windows so dusty it was very hard to see you, particularly from my seat three in from either side. However I caught a glimpse of some parked safari vehicles and guessed we were at the viewpoint and had better phone, only to find I had no mobile reception. I had visions of stumbling across a
When the mist cleared I went for a walk along the crater rim with an armed ranger, Maxwell. I assumed the gun was probably only for show so asked him if he ever used it. "All the time," he asserted, usually to frighten off belligerent buffalo, but last year he had to kill a pride of six lions after they had eaten three Masai children. After lions have tasted human flesh they have to be shot before they kill again, he explained.

We walked past Masai children of six years old herding huge herds of goats, including one carrying a baby goat they had helped deliver that day. We then came across a group of three Masai boys with white paint on their faces. They seemed almost as interested in me as I was in them. Maxwell explained their markings signified they had been circumcised last week and they now had to spend eight months living independently away from the village. When they returned they would be recognised as men. They were between 8 and 13 years old. None of them was now in school, two of them had never been as their parents had refused to let them go. They said they were sad about this, but had had no choice.

They were then joined by four more boys with markings and one without.
He was unable to get circumcised because his father did not have a cow to slaughter. When the boys are cut they bleed, and have to replace the blood they lose by drinking cattle blood. Not being circumcised means he will be unable to marry. I asked about the girls, and Maxwell said although they don't admit FGM goes on any more, they still do it secretly.

The next morning I set off with Steven before dawn down into the crater. As we descended we left the cloud behind and the huge expanse of the crater appeared with an enormous white salt flat from an evaporated lake at its centre.
We saw lions asleep, right by the road. They looked very settled, but Steven warned me not to put my head out of the window as they can pounce very suddenly.

We followed a hippo doggedly walking half a mile to a watering hole.
It's unuusal to see them out of the water during the day. At the water hole there were 40 more soaking themselves, and occasionally rolling over to expose their pink bellies. A flock of storks landed in a line and

I wouldn't say the buffalo looked very friendly either. They kill the most people of any wild animal, followed by hippo and elephants.
